A cottage style house plan should feel like home the moment you see it—and the moment you step inside. That means covered porches that actually frame the entrance, not a shallow stoop. It means craftsman details that feel intentional, not bolted-on. It means the cozy interior doesn't sacrifice function.
This design has been refined across 35 years of building. The covered porch creates a transition space—protection from weather, a place to sit and watch the neighborhood, a buffer between street and home. Inside, the charming aesthetic never gets in the way of livability. The spaces flow logically. The kitchen works for real cooking. The bedrooms get good light. Storage exists where you actually need it.
Cottage style doesn't have to mean precious or cramped. Done right, it's just thoughtful design that respects both beauty and practicality.
Foothills Cottage is one of our most popular plans. It's a Cottage Style House Plan with Rustic details and is just the right size for a Lake or Mountain getaway. It has a very open Floorplan. The kitchen, dining and family room all enjoy great views. Porches and decks that open off the common areas enjoy views from two walls of windows. Two of the bedrooms open to decks and a porches. Craftsman details and an outdoor fireplace complete this plan.I designed Foothill’s Cottage as a 5-bedroom, 3.5-bath cottage that stacks 1,613 square feet across three stories on sloping, corner, and narrow lots. This plan packs more living into a compact footprint than nearly any other design in the catalog, with a first-floor master, a golf cart garage, and outdoor living on every level.
The main floor holds 1,111 square feet with a vaulted family room, a first-floor master, and an open floorplan that keeps kitchen, dining, and living connected. Nine-foot ceilings maintain the proportions while the vaulted family room adds the volume the main living space needs. Upstairs, 502 square feet adds bedrooms and flexible space. The lower level mirrors the main floor with 1,111 square feet holding a golf cart garage, game room, and flex room. Every floor earns its keep in this design.
A front porch, screened rear porch, covered side porch, grill deck, open upper deck, and lower patio give you outdoor living options that rival homes three times this size. At 44 feet 8 inches wide by 48 feet deep, this cottage fits narrow and corner lots where most five-bedroom plans cannot even break ground. The three-story design makes the most of sloping terrain, turning a challenging site into a fully livable home on every level.
The Foothill’s Cottage plan is available for $1,495. For similar compact cottage designs, see Acadia Mountain Cottage, Watersound Cottage, Fairy Tale Cottage, and Stone Ridge Cottage.

Builder Insight
I designed the Foothill's Cottage the way I approach every plan — starting with how a family actually lives in a home, not with the exterior style. Open flow where it matters, private space where it's needed, and no wasted square footage. That's 25 years of building experience in every dimension.
