I designed Diana’s Dog Trot as a 4-bedroom, 3-bath dogtrot cabin that delivers 1,555 square feet across two stories on a narrow lot footprint just 48 feet 8 inches wide. This is a modern take on the classic dogtrot layout where a screened-in breezeway connects two wings of the home with open air between them.
The main floor gives you 738 square feet per wing with a vaulted great room that makes the compact cabin feel open and generous. The screened-in dogtrot porch in the center becomes the favorite room in the house on warm days, connecting both living wings while letting every breeze pass through. Upstairs, a vaulted loft at 374 square feet opens to the living space below, adding a flexible room for sleeping, office, or retreat that stays connected to the heart of the home. Nine-foot ceilings on the main level keep the proportions comfortable.
A front porch stretches across the facade and the dogtrot screened porch provides covered outdoor living in the center of the home. At 48 feet 8 inches wide by 43 feet 4 inches deep with no garage, this cabin fits narrow lots where conventional plans cannot work. The guest wing gives visitors their own space separate from the main living areas. It is a building tradition that still makes perfect sense for narrow lots and warm climates.
The Diana’s Dog Trot plan is available for $1,495. For more dogtrot designs, see Big Dogtrot, Camp Creek Cabin, Fish Camp Cabin, and Hatchet Creek.

Builder Insight
I've always respected the dogtrot as one of the most honest house forms — it was engineered by people who understood their climate before air conditioning existed. The breezeway isn't a gimmick in this plan. It provides real passive cooling and creates an outdoor living space that connects both wings in a way no enclosed hallway can.
