How I designed this plan.

The Hatchet Creek is the small guest house plan I keep coming back to when someone needs a compact cabin that punches well above its size. With 1 bedroom, 1 bath, and 794 square feet across two stories, this little plan is perfect for a guest house, rental cabin, or a starter home on a small lot.

Inside, the main floor is one open living space with vaulted ceilings that draw your eyes up and make 538 square feet feel genuinely comfortable. There are no unnecessary walls breaking up the flow. The bedroom and bath sit naturally within the layout, and upstairs a loft adds 256 square feet of flexible space for a home office, extra sleeping, or just a quiet place to read.

Vaulted ceilings throughout keep the air and light moving in a way that flat ceilings simply cannot match. Both front and rear porches extend your living space outdoors, giving you a place to sit morning and evening depending on where the sun falls. At just 23 feet wide and 32 feet 6 inches deep, this plan fits on small lots and corner lots with ease. No garage keeps the build simple and the costs down.

It is honest, efficient design that does not try to be something it is not. The Hatchet Creek plan is available for $1,495. If you are exploring small cabins, also see Cook Cottage, Black Mountain Cottage, Nantahala Cottage, and Fish Camp Cabin.

Common Questions

Before you buy.

What is included in the Hatchet Creek house plan set?+

Each plan set includes dimensioned floor plans for all levels, front, side, and rear elevations at 1/4" scale with notes and dimensions, foundation plan (basement standard; slab and crawlspace available for an additional fee), and roof plan. Available as a PDF plan set ($1,495) or editable CAD files ($1,950). Can the Hatchet Creek plan be modified?+

Yes. Modifications are one of the most common services we provide. Our in-house design team handles all modifications directly. Common changes include adjusting bedroom count, resizing rooms, changing exterior materials, or adapting for a specific lot. Typical turnaround is 2 to 4 weeks. Contact Max Fulbright Designs at (770) 301-4214 or [email protected] for a free consultation and quote.

Does the Hatchet Creek plan require a structural engineer's stamp?+

Stock plans do not include a professional engineer's stamp. Many US jurisdictions require a licensed engineer in your state to review and stamp the plans before permit submission. Check with your local building department before purchasing. This is a standard industry practice and is not unique to Max Fulbright Designs.

Who designed the Hatchet Creek house plan?+

The Hatchet Creek house plan was drawn personally by Max Fulbright Sr., the founder of Max Fulbright Designs. Max is a Georgia Institute of Technology-trained engineer who has designed and personally built more than 500 custom homes since founding the firm in 1990. Every plan in the Max Fulbright Designs catalog is drawn by Max himself.

Can I build the Hatchet Creek house plan in any US state?+

Yes. Max Fulbright Designs has delivered more than 12,000 plans to homeowners and builders in all 50 US states and Canada. The Hatchet Creek plan is drawn to general residential construction standards that work in most US jurisdictions, though local building codes vary and should be reviewed with your builder before construction.
