How I designed this plan.

Sometimes the best design is the simplest one. The Black Mountain Cottage is a small cabin with a loft that delivers 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, and 794 square feet in a package just 23 feet wide. If you need a mountain cottage for a narrow lot, a weekend retreat, or a rental property, this plan was built for exactly that.

Walk through the door and you are in a single open living space with 11-foot-2-inch ceilings that make this tiny cabin feel remarkably spacious. Sliding barn doors separate the bedroom from the main area, adding character while saving the swing space a traditional door would eat.

The loft above is accessed by a roll-out ladder, giving you 186 square feet of flexible space for sleeping, storage, or a reading nook tucked under the roofline. At 608 square feet on the main level, every detail is intentional. The exterior keeps things honest with a simple front stoop and clean lines. At just 23 feet wide by 28 feet 8 inches deep, this cottage tucks onto small and narrow lots that most plans cannot fit.

No garage means lower construction costs and a smaller foundation. It is proof that living small does not mean living without style or comfort. The Black Mountain Cottage plan is available for $1,495. For more small cabin ideas, check out Cook Cottage, Nantahala Cottage, Hatchet Creek, and Fish Camp Cabin.

Check with your local building department before purchasing. This is a standard industry practice and is not unique to Max Fulbright Designs.

The Black Mountain Cottage house plan was drawn personally by Max Fulbright Sr., the founder of Max Fulbright Designs. Max is a Georgia Institute of Technology-trained engineer who has designed and personally built more than 500 custom homes since founding the firm in 1990. Every plan in the Max Fulbright Designs catalog is drawn by Max himself.

Can I build the Black Mountain Cottage house plan in any US state?+

Yes. Max Fulbright Designs has delivered more than 12,000 plans to homeowners and builders in all 50 US states and Canada. The Black Mountain Cottage plan is drawn to general residential construction standards that work in most US jurisdictions, though local building codes vary and should be reviewed with your builder before construction.
